[b]Francophones find a nook at book fair[/b]
THE French book store at the Doha International Exhibition 2008 is well stocked with well-known Arabic books translated into French.
Najet Miled, the lady owner of Dar Sindibad Publishing House said that she chose a collection of classic and modern Arabic literature translated into French because she believed it matched the interests of the Francophone community in Qatar. “When I learnt that the Doha exhibition did not comprise a French section, I decided to come and be the first,” she said.
Miled, who is visiting Qatar for the first time, said that other books in her stall dealt with Arab and Islamic culture, Islam, education, children and cuisine.
She said most of the visitors to her stall were French speakers including Tunisians, Moroccans and Lebanese.
One Lebanese resident told Gulf Times she was desperately looking for original French novels but couldn’t find any in the French section.
“I have been losing my French language in Qatar because English is the second language here, I tried many times for French books at the Virgin Store in vain.”
She said she did not want translated books and that she missed reading famous French writers such as Victor Hugo, Marcel Pagnol and Antoine de Saint Exupery.
“I could not find any at the exhibition as well which is such a disappointment,” she added.
Miled said that she did not have the slightest idea about the readers’ needs in Qatar. “I will in the coming few days,” she added.
Miled said her next year’s participation would be based on the level of her sales this year. She has offered to mail books from France to interested buyers. |
